iThemba Pharmaceuticals (Pty) Ltd., based in Modderfontein, Gauteng, South Africa was established to discover and develop new and affordable medicines for the neglected infectious diseases of Africa. An opportunity has arisen for ambitious individuals with the relevant skills and high levels of achievement to work at the GSK Tres Cantos Open Laboratory in Madrid, Spain, and at iThemba Pharmaceuticals in South Africa on one of the following two projects:

Tuberculosis (TB) drug discovery targeting an enzyme implicated in persistence. The successful candidate will join a medicinal chemistry team and contribute to an active GSK program.

Data mining the patents in the GSK knowledge pool. The candidate will search the patents in the GSK knowledge pool against pre-defined criteria to establish and recommend the most promising candidate(s) for further investigation.

Candidates will be highly skilled in synthetic chemistry and/or informatics, and be independent thinkers. As a participant in a multi-disciplinary team, the candidate will be required to show evidence of an excellent teamwork ethos, strong communication skills and an ability to work in a research environment.

To be considered for these positions, you must be educated to a minimum of PhD level in chemistry (or related discipline) and/or informatics. Additional, relevant postgraduate qualifications and/or industrial experience would be an advantage for these positions.
