Applications are invited for this position for appointment from 1 January 2011, or as soon as possible thereafter.  The Dean holds the status of a full professor in the Faculty and appointment is normally for five years, subject to negotiation.

The Faculty of Science enjoys a national and international reputation for the quality, impact and visibility of its teaching, research and outreach programmes, with a commitment to producing the knowledge and skills required to meet the challenges of a changing South Africa.  It is well placed to contribute substantially to UCT’s goal of being a research-led university.  More than 75% of our 170 full-time permanent academic staff in the Faculty have current NRF ratings, half of these being in the A or B category, and 90% of our academic staff hold PhD degrees. The average annual rate of publication in scientific peer-reviewed literature exceeds three per staff member.  

We seek a Dean with an outstanding record of research and scholarship in the Sciences, coupled with the leadership, management and interpersonal skills required to build on the strength of the Faculty and meet its challenges in innovative ways.

 

The appointee will be responsible for forging and sustaining a strategic vision for the Faculty in line with the mission of the university, ensuring sound financial management and effective administration, assuring the continuing provision of high quality education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and developing its research profile.

 

The Dean will also be expected to lead transformation in the Faculty, and in the university generally, by implementing measures to improve, inter alia, the race and gender representivity of students and staff in the Faculty, to enhance diversity in the institution and to stimulate debate and take initiative with respect to the broad issues of equity and equality. At a university-wide level, the Dean is a member of the senior leadership of the university and will be expected to contribute to broad institutional leadership and management.

 

The remuneration package is negotiable and includes competitive benefits.
