The Benefits of belonging to SACI
THE BENEFITS OF BELONGING TO SACI
- SACI is the only body in South Africa which is concerned solely with the promotion of the interests of chemistry and chemists. This involves representation on SACNASP, NSTF/SETAG, CHIETA and other government and non-government organizations. SACI thus acts as a vehicle for passing on information to the public on chemical issues.
- SACI has both a geographical and a discipline-based structure. There are local coordination committees in Gauteng, Western Cape, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. In addition, the eleven divisions cater for analytical, environmental, industrial, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry, electrochemistry, chemical education, molecular spectroscopy and the two former independent societies, ChromSA and SAAMS, which are now themselves divisions of SACI.
- The membership structure allows for Corporate Members, who possess formal chemistry qualifications, Associate Members, who may be people without such qualifications but who have an interest in chemical matters, Student Members and Company and Patron Members. Full-time students at the BSc Honours and BTech level enjoy free membership for the duration of their qualifications, and MSc, PhD, MTech and DTech pay a nominal annual student membership fee.
- SACI holds a Convention every two years, which caters for researchers across the whole spectrum of chemistry to report their results, at a variety of locations across the country, according to a prearranged schedule. Many of the divisions, e.g. inorganic and organic chemistry, also hold regular biennial specialist conferences, which also rotate among the major centres. Reduced registration fees apply for SACI members to SACI-sponsored conferences and workshops, which may be from 1-day to 5-day events.
- Membership of SACI entitles chemists to join IUPAC, and enjoy access to IUPAC publications and services.
- SACI publishes an electronic research journal, the South African Journal of Chemistry, which is abstracted by Chemical Abstracts, is cited by the Institute for Scientific Information and is accredited for subsidy purposes by the Department of National Education.
- SACI makes an annual series of awards recognizing outstanding achievements by its members, for publication in the South African Journal of Chemistry and in the Analytical Reporter, for Innovation, for Chemical Education, for student leadership and for meritorious achievement on the part of students in the final year of the BSc Honours or BTech programmes.
- SACI fosters and encourages student participation in events of interest to chemists, such as the Young Chemists' Events, research colloquia, postgraduate symposia and visits to industry. Most of these events are made accessible to student members by means of industrial sponsorships and differential registration fee structures.
- SACI publishes a quarterly newsletter, which reports news and events of interests to chemists, and which contains a regular message from the president.
- SACI has links with other related institutions and associations, for example the South African Institution of Chemical Engineers, the Chemical and Allied Industries Association and the Royal Society of Chemistry.
- SACI carries out an annual salary survey, which may be made available on request to the major employers of chemists in South Africa.
- Royal Society of Chemistry benefits for SACI members: 15% discount on RSC books, Up to £50 off the cost of RSC conferences and training courses, Use of the RSC Library email enquiry service, Receive the RSC online newsletter; Grapevine, Online access to selected RSC publications .
- Montly Newsletters.
